A constitutional referendum passed in 2009 stated that Comoros is an Islamic state, although Sharia (Islamic law) has not yet been implemented. There has been an increase in Muslim fundamentalists coming to Comoros to teach their doctrine in the local mosques. Occult movements are also gaining ground and are winning over some Christians, causing disunity in churches. Those who come to faith in Christ from a Muslim background face many difficulties. However, the small underground church is growing - albeit at a slow pace.
